IECEP Caraga conducts technical seminars

Institute of Electronics Engineers of the Philippines, Inc (IECEP) Caraga Chapter conducted the 2nd quarter officers’ meeting and technical seminars on Fiber Optics Communications and Internet Protocol PABX held at St. Paul University Surigao (SPUS), Surigao City last June 27, 2009.

Facilitating the seminar conducted at the SPUS Gymnasium were Engr. Alexander T. Demetillo, OIC-Dean of CEIT--also the Governor of IECEP Caraga, Engr. Jeffrey T. Dellosa, Vice Governor for Education–IECEP Caraga, Engr. Robert Bacarro of SPUS, the Vice Governor - External and Engr. Rowena M. Rosal (SPUS) who acted as the host of the day's event.

The technical seminars on Fiber Optics Communications and the Internet Protocol Private Automated Branch Exchange (IP PABX) aimed to update the IECEP Caraga members on the current technologies in digital communications. This is in cognizant to the mission of IECEP of providing quality seminars to upgrade the skills of its members which forms part of the continuing education program in their chosen field. The IECEP Caraga leadership is seeking for the Continuing Professional Education credit units from its parent chapter.

Engr. Joey P. Dela Cruz, an ECE was the resource speaker in both Fiber Optics and IP PABX seminars. Engr. Dela Cruz is the general manager of Unicenter Communications based in Davao City. He holds his Masters of Engineering major in Electronics and Communications Engineering from the University of Mindanao in Davao City. He has vast experience in Fiber Optics and IP PABX while working in Meridian Telekoms, Inc. He is at the same time a faculty member of the graduate studies in the University of South Eastern Philippines (USEP) in Davao City.

Fiber-optic communication, in a nutshell, is a method of transmitting information from one place to another by sending pulses of light through an optical fiber. The light forms an electromagnetic carrier wave that is modulated to carry information and have played a major role in the advent of the Information Age. IP PABX, meanwhile, is a hosted PBX solution, which uses the internet as the backbone and uses IP protocol to deliver crystal clear digital voice quality.

Other IECEP officers present during the technical seminar and membership meeting were Engr. Robert Bacarro, the IECEP Vice Governor for External Affairs and a faculty member of St. Paul University, Engr. Perfecto R. Ruaya, Engr. Ramil P. Leones and Engr. Lawrence P. Salang , all members of the Board of Directors.

Engr. Demetillo, as the governor of the Chapter led the officers meeting and discussed the following topics:

1. Financial status of the organization
2. Holding of Embedded Systems and Matlab seminar
3. Program of activities for the rest of the year
4. IECEP National Convention in SMX, Manila
5. Implementation of RA9292 in key cities

A total of fifteen IECEP members in Caraga and 83 Electronics Engineering students from the different schools in Caraga attended the 2nd quarter seminar and officers’ meeting.

Among the schools who attended the one day event were:

1. Saint Paul University Surigao (SPUS) in Surigao City as the host school
2. Northern Mindanao State Institute of Science and Technology (NORMISIST) in Butuan City
3. Surigao State College of Science and Technology (SSCT) in Surigao City
4. Science Education Center in Surigao City
5. Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur.
